Jane Jacobs on developing healthy, liveable communities

“It’s impossible to make a community without networks.” –Jane Jacobs

There is a reason why Jane Jacobs is considered by many to be North America’s greatest urban activist. Although this 10-minute video is from 2002, it addresses some of the major things a sustainable community requires to be successful.

I think Jacobs’ comments at the end of the video are important:

1. Study what works in other places and don’t hide these examples under a bushel.
2. But also remember: one-size doesn’t fit all
3. The greatest asset a city can have is something that’s different from any other place.
